Julija Ljubljana, owned by Vito Korošec and Irena Prebil, is one of Old Town’s best Ljubljana restaurants, with decorative platters and dynamic pairings, all with Slovenian flavors in mind.

One fine spring day Dad made the solemn announcement that it was finally time for our family to visit Julja restaurant which is ranked one of the “best eateries” in Ljubljana by TripAdvisor.  (And has been for over 10 years!)

Regardless, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.  I like to stay with the tried and tested places, the Ljubljana restaurants that keep me coming back for more.  Why risk a bad meal, right?

But again, my Dad’s got an insatiable appetite for new things and I have to admit that he (almost) never leads me astray.  Plus, once he gets an idea for something, it’s pretty impossible to convince him otherwise.  “Stubborn” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Location & Setting

The location of Julija couldn’t be better.  It’s in the middle of Old Town, which is always romantic, with its winding cobblestone streets.  You’ll find it just a stone throw from Ljubljanica river, tucked away in a medieval street, at a safe distance from the roving crowds of Preseren Square.

The place is small, with a warm atmosphere, big, bright windows and classic décor.  Its French and Austrian design makes it intimate, with few tables in two dining rooms—meaning Dad made a reservation, just in case.  I warmly recommend a reservation.  This is especially true when the outdoor terrace is closed due to bad weather.

The Julija menu is mid-priced, with higher quality food and service than most mid-priced restaurants in the city.  The menu isn’t expansive, which means that each individual dish is refined and perfected.  Julija also offers a taste of Slovenian food, such as Idrija žlikrofi, which are Slovenian dumplings, along with other specialties.

But enough about that.  You want to know what we ate!

The Meal

Our waiter was really kind and efficient, taking care of us from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, and telling us everything we needed to know for the meal ahead.  I already had the sneaking suspicion that Dad had discovered another gem.  But I didn’t want to give him credit quite yet.

Tagliata with Peppers on Rocket Salad with Young Potatoes

Dad’s kind of finicky about his ordering.  As you can see, there’s not a single potato on his plate—young or old.  He likes to change his dishes in restaurants, adding or removing ingredients.  (Although he chose not to do that in Luda and Monstera—for obvious reasons: their artistic Chefs wouldn’t listen!)

For this round, he opted for grilled vegetables instead of potatoes—creating a perfect meal in his health-conscious eyes.  “Just greens and proteins.”  Whatever!

Ljubljana restaurant Julija, homeade Istrian pasta

Istrian-Style Handmade Pasta

Unlike my health-obsessed father, I was absolutely starving (nothing unusual, I suppose).  I opted for handmade pasta, Istrian-style, with cep mushrooms and asparagus.  It was extraordinary!

The pasta was cooked “al dente,” just how I like it, and the mushrooms and asparagus smelled and tasted divine.  The platter was rather large, filling me up for at least the next few hours.  (I can’t help it!  I love to eat!)

Ljubljana restaurant Julija - chicken fillet in basil sauce

Chicken Fillet in Basil Sauce with Cherry Tomatoes

My sister Enja opted for the chicken which was slathered in this thick basil sauce.  She sat with it, eating it quietly, before deducing: the chicken was yummy, but the sauce was the best part!  I tried it myself, and have to agree.

Veal Fillet with Pureed Truffles and Grilled Asparagus

Mom always orders well.  It’s just what she does.  And just a glance at her plate of veal, at the colors and decorations, I realized she’d done it again!

The pureed truffles were out of this world, blending perfectly with flavorful, quickly grilled asparagus, and the veal was soft and tender, with a smoky taste.  Why haven’t I ordered that?

Dad ate at Julija many times.  This was my first but certainly not the last time.

The Owners

Julija is owned by Vito Korošec and Irena Prebil, both of whom are proud owners of two other popular Ljubljana restaurants: a high-end Valvas’or and a mid-priced, but equally delightful, Robba restaurant.  (Which I hope to visit soon and then I’ll tell you all about it.)

Vito circles between his three places, all of which are within a few minutes’ walk—ensuring all is well and checking in with guests.  He stopped by our table, much to my Dad’s excitement.  As usual, he dove into another long conversation, which resulted in an exchange of business cards.  We can’t take him anywhere!

All in all, we had a remarkable time at Julija restaurant.  We love the super central location, the friendly and professional staff, and the gorgeous food, along with the romantic feel of the interior.  Sitting outside on the terrace, in the midst of Old Town Ljubljana, felt like a dream.

I had to give credit to Dad, yet another great choice.  Though, after adding fantastic Julija restaurant to my list of “tried and tested”, my issue with trying new places has only become bigger.  😉
